I'm really hoping the game will turn out well, though the art style doesn't suit me that much. On that note, amazing work as always HJ! I really love how you do your shading/coloring lately.

I always wonder why did they call him Mighty No. 9 and not No. 1?
Could it be you have to beat No. 1-8 first?

Well way to beat around the bush. That is some exciting news to hear about the new "megaman" series. Again it's not Megaman... or is it?

Colours are fun as always :^)
Would love to see some really refined satuff from you at some point though, with controlled lines and fully rendered colours - it's too easy to get away with stuff in fun sketches ;^D

lol I think that's the artist's style.

Thing with style is that it doesn't protect you from criticism :^)
Fast and loose is great, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be better if it was refined.

Actually I would argue that that's not true. The raw, never-static quality of her work is what gives it its charm. There is no rule that says that the more time you spend on an illustration, the more merit it has. I've spent months on some pictures refining the outlines and rendering it neatly, and sure I guess some people like that, but I'd say those are actually pretty boring and lacking in expression compared to the looser rougher drawings I've done in under an hour.

Apologies for the late reply.

I think the work stands on its own for significantly more than "the
lines aren't clean so that's great" tbh.
The work being dynamic, free and charming isn't a consquence of
sloppy work, it's a consequence of good composition, construction
and colouring.

A higher degree of technical accuracy, clean colouring and the like
would not interfere with the underlying positive qualities of the work -
it can still remain raw without having rubbed lines and rough edges.

Feel free to argue for crappy line control and no cleanup all you want,
after all, art is subjective. I think it would benefit the artist to work
on improving those aspects though :^)

That's no problem.

Those would be fine points for certain artists, but seriously if you've never seen her sketches in person, I wouldn't presume that there's only one linear approach to making anyone's work 'better'. It sounds like you have a very conventional, Western view of what criteria make a good picture, and that's fine, but it's not a view that dictates much or holds a lot of weight outside of that sphere.

Here, I'm only speaking from my own perspective, but a lot of people have all those things you listed including good construction and composition from a technical standpoint, but many of them make ultimately make dull work because they lack a certain character and expressiveness, or great application of color but uninteresting color sense.

All those things except for maybe technical accuracy of the form (not the cleanliness or tightness of the lines) you think would improve it would directly take away from, as I said, the rough, raw spontaneity of her style that gives her work its charm and sets it apart from others. You think she *can't* color more neatly if she wanted to? You think she *couldn't* make cleaner lines if she deliberately decided to? And since this particular deviation we're commenting on is more filler than anything else, I wouldn't even use this as a measuring stick of her ability.

I'm not suggesting there's one linear approach to making her
work better, nor am i saying that good technical form magically
makes good art - I've not disagreed that there are many cases
of technically good but creatively dull art.

In terms of measuring sticks, I am not using this piece as a
measuring stick, more an example of problematic technique.
Good measuring sticks for this artist that are immediately
available are (imo)…

I'd say that these pieces are very strong, and perhaps some of
hj's more refined work - that said, I still think they could benefit
from more attention spent.

I completely disagree that more refinement in the feet, texture
above the frame, and careful lighting in the flowers on the left
of III - bring the quality that's present in their hair and faces
into the rest of the art. Fish girl is more refined, but there are
strange artefacts like the bar shading through the fish on the left
but not on the right - minor things that could be cleaned up in
minutes for the betterment of the final product.

Re: Differing western/eastern/whatever values, all of the anime
that I've seen (and the higher detail art related to said anime)
has refined, clear lines describing forms. All of the series that
hj does fanart of has art with very refined, clear lines describing
forms. Compare the refinement in this rockman zero art:…
There's still raw, free qualities to this art, but it is much cleaner.

Re: "you haven't seen her do this irl", all I have to judge from is
the outcome, not the process :^)

Interesting discussing this with you, I hope I'm not touching nerves
but I don't share your view that a stylistic or regional difference
means that refinement would detract from these pieces.
